Hintok River Camp

Hintok is a beautiful glamping site far into the Kanchanaburi province in the west of Thailand. Glamping I would describe as a luxurious way of camping. You still get to stay in tent but these come with all the luxurious amenities that a modern resort can offer. The tents have normal beds, they even have airconditioning. And the glamping site includes a nice restaurant, swimming pool, etc.

In the summer of 2015 we were looking for a different experience in Kanchanaburi. We had been to Kanchanaburi and had tried many of the hotels and resort. There are many great places to stay in this province and some of these locations you can find on this website as well. But this time we wanted something different. That is when we found Hintok River Camp. In one of my very first visits to Thailand I went by train to the Saiyok Noi waterfall. I still have a lot of good memories of this visit. Hintok River Camp is a bit beyond this waterfall along the same road 323 so we decided to give glamping a try. We did not regret this.

Hintok River Camp is a half day drive (4 hours or so) from Bangkok. Once you pass Kanchanaburi town you drive towards the Saiyok Noi waterfall via road 323.  The Saiyok Noi waterfall area is easily recognized as on the left of the road you suddenly have many shops selling food and drinks. From here you continue until you reach the Hell Fire Pass Memorial Museum. The museum is on a military area. To reach you river camp you will have to go into this area as well. Via this area you follow a small road that at some point follows goes steep down the hill. Every now and then some small signs will guide you to the Hintok River Camp. Finally as you might start to think you can’t go much further into the forest you reach the site.

Immediately you will recognize that is very quiet here. Upon our arrival we were welcomed by friendly staff. The checking was fast and quick. The staff explained a bit about the site and the location of the swimming pool (later more). They explained that every evening there is a buffet dinner on the lawn in the middle of the site. A mix of western and Thai dishes are served there. Some of them are made on the barbeque during the dinner.

Staff then helped us finding our tents. The tents are setup around the lawn in between the trees. Each tent comes with beds (of course), a mini bar, electricity, a nice bathroom and airconditioning. While technically it is tent you get all the luxury as in a nice hotel room.

We settled in and then were ready to eat and drink something. We walked back to the reception area. Right next to this there is a small restaurant with a beautiful view over the river further down the hill. This is just a nice smaller restaurant while in the morning a bit bigger restaurant a 30 meters away from this one is used. The restaurant offers a mix of western and Thai dishes. The staff was very friendly and helpful. One day my wife asked whether they had fresh coconut. That was not available at that time. The next day the same staff member came back to us and told us he had gone to get some coconut. Very nice!

From the restaurant you can see good that you are far into the forest. There are not many other buildings to be seen. When you look down you can see the river and the Hintok River Camp pier. If you wish you can go down there and just hang around.

When you take steep walk down from the site you reach the natural pool. This pool is located a bit above the river and from the water you have a beautiful view over the whole curve in the river.

Walk all the way down and you get to the pier. From here you can start a number of excursions. I will later describe the excursion we did in a separate post. Some nice lazy chairs will also allow you to just hang around and do nothing or e.g. read a nice book. Bring some drinks as the restaurant does not come down here to serve you something. You would also not want to keep walking back up and down as it is a bit of a climb.

Back up at the site we slowly saw more visitors arrive. Almost all of them came by minivan as part of a tour. Usually it seemed that it was just one family. You will not see a big bus full of tourists come here. When the evening came the staff started to prepare for the outdoor dinner. Oil lamps were lit and tables setup. Dinner was nice in the open air. As you do not hear any car or other mechanical noise you really can enjoy the time sitting outside.

Staff at the site can help you book a number of different day tours. We did a river trip by long tail boat and bamboo raft with a visit to a Mon village. The trip over the river was amazing. It was all so green aside the river. Beautiful. A different post will be dedicated to this trip.

Other possible visits from here include the Saiyok Noi and Saiyok Yai waterfalls, the Hell Fire Pass Museum and more. The visit to the museum is definitely recommended to get an impression of what happened in this area during the Second World War.

Hintok River Camp might be part of your tour around Thailand. If not make sure you get transportation by renting van with driver or have your own car.
