Doi Suthep

Doi Suthep is not to be missed when visiting Chiang Mai. Located just outside the city on the mountain overlooking the city this beautiful temple can be visited in a half day. The temple is actually called Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Doi Suthep is just the name of the mountain. The golden chedi is beautifully standing on the hill and can be seen from many places in the city.

If you are lucky and the weather does not create a hazy condition you can enjoy a great view over the city of Chiang Mai. The heat however can create a bit of a haze. May be it is worth coming early for a clearer view. I have not been able to do that so I can’t say for sure that this will make a difference.

If you have some time left after visiting the temple drive a bit further up the hill to visit the beautiful Bhubing Palace.

How to get here?

Follow the directions to the Chiang Mai Zoo and then follow the road 1004 up the hill (approximate 11 km from the zoo). You will reach an area with some parking spots (not too many) and a large number of food and souvenir shops. From here you can take the long way up to the temple via the stairs with probably around 300 steps. If this looks too much challenging move to the right (while looking at the stairs). I got the impression that not many knew this but a bit further in that direction you can use an elevator to make the way to the top.
